Reasons not to use Windows, or to be more specific, IE

A bug in Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser is causing more than 50 million files stored online to leak potentially sensitive information that could compromise user privacy, a security researcher said.

The documents stored in Adobe's PDF format display the internal disk location where the file is stored, an oversight that can inadvertently expose real-world names and login IDs of users, the operating system being used and other information that is better kept private. The data can then be retrieved using simple web searches.

Phoronix Netbook Benchmarks

Intel released Moblin 2.1 earlier this month, Canonical released Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 late last month, and various other vendors have offered up their fall distribution refreshes too. Oh yeah, and Google just released the Chromium OS source code a few days ago! With all of the netbook-focused distribution updates, we found it time to run an onslaught of new benchmarks, comparing some of the leaders in this field along with running a couple full-blown desktop distributions for this round of Linux netbook benchmarking. Here are our benchmarks, including the world's first look at the Chromium OS (Chrome OS) system performance from the latest development build. Covered is everything from the video playback performance to encoding to battery power consumption and CPU/memory usage tests.

The netbook we used for this Linux benchmarking fiesta was a Samsung NC10 comprised of an Intel Atom N270 processor clocked at 1.60GHz, the motherboard uses an Intel 945GME + ICH7-M Chipset with the standard 945 integrated graphics, 2GB of system memory, a 32GB OCZ Core Series V2 SSD, and a 1024 x 600 LCD panel. All of this hardware had worked fine, including the integrated 802.11g WiFi, with all distributions tested -- Chromium OS included.

Opera 10.10

Opera 10.10 has been released, and with it their new "Unite" technology, which allows users to share content directly between all of their own devices. Unite wraps both web browser and web server into a single package in an attempt to change the way users think about their browser. "'We promised Opera Unite would reinvent the Web,' said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera. 'What we are really doing is reinventing how we as consumers interact with the Web. By giving our devices the ability to serve content, we become equal citizens on the Web. In an age where we have ceded control of our personal data to third-parties, Opera Unite gives us the freedom to choose how we will share the data that belongs to us.'"

Ubuntu vs. FreeBSD. And the winner is...

Ubuntu's up-and-coming new release seemingly has topped FreeBSDs. I thought that was interesting, considering that many friends who have dabbled in BSD in the past have touted it as better than linux in a myriad of ways. Well, chalk one up to linux and have a look at the benchmarks for yourself.

Geek Wedding.

I was at the Ohio Linuxfest on 9/26, and apparently two geeks were wed there, and I had no idea. I would absolutely love to see such a thing come to pass. Hopefully, everything turns out well for the newlyweds. My apologies for not being at the wedding and wishing them well in person. Stay tuned for a nice posting with a link to my gallery of linuxfest pictures from this year (and last!). Stay tuned.

The Geek Funeral

I can only hope that my children would be so kind as to find a way for me to go out in this fashion. I don't know about a sparc station, I always wanted one, but never owned or even used one. Well, not in person. Anyhow, maybe I'll be buried in my favorite computer case someday ;) Someone should make a note to tell my kids this.

Does your school or university support

This question posted on slashdot is a very important one. Does your college or school support linux? Should they? I certainly think they should. Linux is free software, and therefore makes initial investment cheaper, since you're not paying Microsoft or Apple for their operating system. Also, it would help breed a new generation of computer users that know they have a choice when it comes to an operating system.
